What is Reading Wonders?

Video

Reading Wonders is a comprehensive literacy curriculum for students in kindergarten through sixth grade developed by McGraw-Hill. It provides a structured approach to reading and writing instruction, focusing on building foundational skills, close reading, and developing comprehension and communication skills through a combination of print and digital resources. The program is designed to meet Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and offers differentiated instruction to meet individual student needs.

01

Reading strategies and skills are analyzed in detail by teachers. Students are focused on developing 4 skills: listening - speaking - reading - writing in the lessons. Daily vocabulary will be supplemented through communication situations according to the topic of each week (weekly concept), helping students practice style and thinking, pronounce correctly like native speakers, and have the ability to use English to research or study other subjects when studying at a higher level.

02

The Reading Wonders curriculum helps students practice their writing skill, which is typically the "weak point" of Vietnamese students. With the Grammar and Writing sections, students will participate in activities such as: Writing Paragraph, Writing Practice, Writing Letters, etc. to get acquainted with different literary genres and writing styles. For example, right from the G1 program, students will get acquainted with how to write short essays with topics close to their lives.

03

The learning method is through a tight lesson structure introduced through each week of study according to topics related to Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, History, International Culture, etc. Speaking and presentation skills are demonstrated through the Talk about the weekly concept section.

04

Through reading comprehension lessons, students learn pronunciation, spelling, grammar, vocabulary and writing strategies.
Writing standards are meticulously and detailedly instructed in this curriculum to help students not be afraid of WRITING.

"On Mondays, we practice with the fluency passage for 5 minutes. Students each read for 2 minutes and they keep track of their progress and get ONE skittle if they improve. This skittle is like gold to them. At the end of the week, they answer the questions that go along with the fluency passage. During whole group, I do the introduction, introduce the vocabulary, and then do my shared read."

- Teacher Danielle, who has been teaching the Wonders curriculum for 2 years

"The seven strategies of highly skilled readers include activating, summarizing, monitoring and clarifying, visualizing and organizing, searching and selecting, questioning, and inferring."

- Patricia Hilliard, from Edutopia.org

"Wonders always say that they give you a buffet of stuff and you get to pick and choose what you use. A great general guide I use is:Monday- introduce the big idea, genre, and vocabulary
Tuesday- learn about the skill/ strategy of the week
Wednesday- apply skill or strategy to the short story in the student consumable book
Thursday- do leveled readers and apply learning to said readers
Friday- check for understanding/ assess
My district really wants us to do more with the student consumables, so see what your district would like you to do and find what will give you the most bang for your buck."

- Teacher Barbara, on Wonders program
